Indian visit to participate IT Conference at Baramathi.

Intel cooperation invited me to participate in the annual Baramathi Initiative IT conferences at VIIT in Maharashta along with five other e-village managers and Mr. Wanninayaka from Horizon Lanka Foundation. This event was sponsored by Intel and the Vidya Pratistan Institute for Information Technology. The Secondary Education Modernization project in the Ministry of Education had decided to give this opportunity for e-village managers.

The topic for this event was ICT for Communities which is associated with our e-village project.

We landed in Chennai Airport on March 22nd at 8.30 am. Then we had to fly over Bangalore to Pune in Maharashta state. It took 2 and half hours to reach Pune. While on this flight we realized the vast size of India compared to Sri Lanka. The flight from Colombo to Chennai took only one hour and five minutes but to fly between two Indian states took longer. While on the way to our Hotel we were surprised by the scenes around us. They were similar to Sri Lankan scenarios. Roads, buses, people, all were similar to our country. Our first meal was a big issue for us. Similar food items could not be found. It was very difficult to find even bread for our first dinner. One of our colleagues had brought a Sri Lankan made curry with him which helped our situation. Next morning we spent few hours in the Pune city. We found that our Hindi knowledge was helpful in getting about the city. Hindi films are very popular in our country and I watch a film every week. This had helped me to learn a lot of Hindi words.Registration for the IT conference was held at the Taj Hotel situated in Pune. It was a star Hotel with a swimming pool. All the participants were registered and informed that we will be taken to Baramathi where the IT conference will take place. It was a two hours journey in an Indian made bus.
This journey helped us identify few participants and see some rural Indian villages. All five of us had our accommodation at the Hotel Saibury. At the Hotel we met some of other participants. They were very interested about our projects and asked for more explanation and clarifications.Baramathi is a developing city in Maharashta state.
The IT field has created many changes in Baramathi. We noticed these through the project the VIIT (Vidya Pratistan Institute of Information Technology) has implemented in Baramathi. VIIT was a well equipped institute in this city and is a reputed name in IT.TENET is a program conducted by the Information section of this institute. They have invented several technologies suited for rural Indian villages.Dr Arathi gave a presentation about this Institute. We found that the Government funded it. Every student had to pass an entrance exam. IIT was not only creating IT personnel but also helping rural villagers uplift their standard of living. This was a different kind of experience for us.Our next visit was designed for us to have an exposure to best practices in all levels of rural projects and helped us in having a comprehensive understating of to how manage a rural computer center in a friendly way.
An opportunity was granted for us to visit a government school in India. It was a primary school and what we saw was not the same as in Sri Lanka. Only one computer can be seen in this school. It had been given by the AID India NGO. No internet connection was available for this school.

Sri Lankan schools have government supplied, well-equipped computer labs with fast Internet connections. The electricity bills and maintenance was paid by the Ministry of Education for two years.
One center we visited is situated in Minvalai, Tiruvallar in Tamil Nadu. It was a self sustaining center. But the problem was the speed of Internet connection. We noticed this at several places.
We visited a very rural place in Tamil Nadu state. The computer center at this location is managed by a lady under the supervision by the IIT. It has been not only providing computer skills but also giving job opportunities such as tailoring and making hand bags. IIT supplied banana fiber for this center and women in the program produced hand bags using this fiber. The IIT helps find a market for their products. This kind of work will pave the way to uplift the villagers’ living conditions. That was the last place we visited.
We gained a lot of experience from this study tour. Especially from the computer centers we visited. As a result of this tour we have gained more experience about rural community activities regarding IT. We would like to thank the Secondary Education Modernization Project of the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka for this valuable learning experience
